New Age Steppers

New Age Steppers was an influential collective led by producer Adrian Sherwood, known for a sound that fused punk's raw edge with the deep grooves of reggae and dub. Emerging from the UK's post-punk scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s, they brought together members from various bands—including The Slits, Creation Rebel, and The Pop Group—to forge a sound that was both experimental and politically charged. The group was characterized by their avant-garde approach to music, which was reflected in their collaborations with artists like Ari Up and Mark Stewart.

The music of New Age Steppers is a testament to the fertile cross-pollination between genres during the period. Thick basslines and echo-drenched production met the rebellious energy of punk, creating an innovative tapestry of sounds. Their discography includes seminal works like their self-titled debut "New Age Steppers" (1981), "Action Battlefield" (1981), and "Foundation Steppers" (1982), which further cemented their status in the burgeoning world of alternative music. Although their output was sporadic, each release from "Threat To Creation" to "Love Forever," which would be their final album released in 2012 after the passing of Ari Up, marked an evolution in their sound and commitment to breaking down musical barriers. "Avant Gardening," "Some Dub," and "Send For Me" feature experimental takes on dub, demonstrating the group's ongoing influence in the genre.
