Tuomas Turriago

Tuomas Turriago (born February 18, 1979) is a Finnish composer, pianist, and conductor celebrated for his versatility across a wide range of musical styles—from classical to contemporary and even music from the world stage. He’s recognized as the first Finnish composer to record his entire piano oeuvre. Turriago cut his musical teeth at the Central Finland Conservatory and the Sibelius Academy, later winning first prize at the Kili Piano Competition in Sweden. His performances have graced festivals and venues across Finland, Europe, the United States, Colombia, and Asia, often alongside leading orchestras like the Tampere Philharmonic and the Jyväskylä Sinfonia.

A founding member and conductor of the Tampere Chamber Opera Association, Turriago has led ensembles including the Vaasa, Seinäjoki, and Mikkeli City Orchestras, and the contemporary music group TampereRaw. Since 2004, he’s served as a senior lecturer at the Tampere University of Applied Sciences and, since 2019, as a chamber music teacher at the Sibelius Academy. His compositions—sometimes playful, sometimes profound—are influenced by both his multicultural roots (his father is Colombian) and a deep reverence for music’s timeless spirit. Recent releases like “Trumpeter’s Menu,” “Somber,” and “Finnish Trumpet Sonatas” showcase his engaging chamber works and innovative piano pieces.
