Quatuor Ysaÿe, known in English as the Ysaÿe Quartet, is a distinguished French string quartet named after the renowned Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe. Founded in 1984 by its first violinist Guillaume Sutre, second violinist Luc-Marie Aguera, violist Miguel da Silva, and cellist Yovan Markovitch, the group quickly established itself as an ensemble of exceptional talent and refinement, celebrated for their insightful interpretations and expressive performances. The quartet initially honed their skills under the tutelage of the Amadeus Quartet and later garnered further inspiration through collaborations with masters like the Hungarian Quartett.
Throughout their illustrious career, the Ysaÿe Quartet has been praised for its contributions to both classical and contemporary repertoire, continuously adding depth to the string quartet literature with a particular affinity for French composers. Their discography reveals a versatile range that not only includes the core classical repertoire of Mozart and Mendelssohn but also extends to the Romantic and modern works of Fauré, Chausson, Franck, Debussy, Ravel, and the contemporary pieces of André Boucourechliev. Renowned for their nuanced interpretations and technical excellence, the Quatuor Ysaÿe has been a fixture in international chamber music circles, performing in prestigious venues worldwide and nurturing the next generation of chamber musicians through teaching engagements, including their role at the Paris Conservatoire (CNSMDP).
