Pauline Hall

Pauline Hall (1890-1969) was a Norwegian composer who blazed trails throughout her career. She was one of the first Norwegian composers to work extensively with dissonance and atonality, pushing musical boundaries in her home country. Hall also embraced smaller, more intimate musical forms, composing a significant body of work for solo piano, songs, and chamber ensembles. Beyond her compositions, she was a respected music critic and a strong advocate for contemporary music, helping to introduce new sounds and ideas to Norwegian audiences.

While she faced challenges as a female composer in a male-dominated field, Hall persevered, earning recognition and respect for her unique musical voice. Her works like the "Piano Time" series and songs like "Til En Kunstner / To an Artist" showcase her distinct style and her commitment to exploring the expressive possibilities of music. She remains an important figure in Norwegian music history, remembered for her innovative spirit and her dedication to her craft.
