Spazz was a prolific powerviolence band, an extreme faction of hardcore punk, hailing from Redwood City, California. The band was formed in 1992 and consisted of Chris Dodge (bass, vocals), Dan Lactose (guitar, vocals), and Max Ward (drums, vocals). They are known for their blistering tempo, ferocious guitar riffs, and a sense of humor that pervades both their lyrics and song titles. The band didn't shy away from the use of samples in their songs, adding a layer of audio collage that became one of their signature elements while hammering home their socio-political commentary.
Spazz distinguished themselves in the underground music scene with a distinct blend of fast-paced, short tracks filled with blast beats and breakdowns. With a fiercely DIY ethic, they found a home in the West Coast's thriving underground music scene of the '90s. Across their career, they put out a multitude of recordings, including 'Crush Kill Destroy' and 'La Revancha', which showcased their musical ferocity and wit. The 'Sweatin’' series of releases, specifically 'Sweatin’ to the Oldies' and 'Sweatin' 3: Skatin', Satan & Katon', compiled live tracks, rarities, and radio broadcasts that captured the raw energy of Spazz's live performances. While not as widely known outside of the hardcore scene, Spazz left a lasting legacy on the powerviolence and hardcore genres, influencing countless bands with their intense sound and unapologetic approach to music-making before disbanding in 2000.
