Emerging from the vibrant New York avant-garde scene in the late 1970s and 1980s, he has worked with a wide array of artists including Laurie Anderson, Steve Reich, Brian Eno, and David Byrne. His solo work blends elements of electronic, ambient, and performance art – often incorporating found objects and unconventional surfaces as percussion instruments.
Van Tieghem gained wider recognition with his 1980s solo albums like "These Things Happen" and "Safety in Numbers," which showcased his quirky yet sophisticated style and visual flair, including memorable music videos featuring him drumming on the streets of New York. In addition to his recording career, he has composed score and sound design for theater, dance, and film, bringing a highly textured and rhythmic sensibility to his collaborative works.
