David Ezra Okonsar

David Ezra Okonsar is a Turkish-Belgian pianist, composer, conductor, writer, and educator. Born on October 20, 1961, in Istanbul, Turkey, he was initially known as Mehmet Okonsar before changing his first name to David Ezra. Okonsar studied piano and composition at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels under renowned instructors like Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden and Madame Jacqueline Fontyn. He also had the opportunity to study with the legendary pianist Alexis Weissenberg in Switzerland. Okonsar has had a distinguished career, winning several prestigious awards, including the Grand Prix Young Virtuoses in Antwerp and prizes in Paris and Rome. He has performed with numerous orchestras worldwide, including the Utah Symphony and the Poznan Philharmonic, and has been recognized as a "State Artist" of the Turkish Republic. His compositions are known for their avant-garde style, and he is also a prolific writer and musicologist.

Okonsar's repertoire spans a wide range of classical music, from early works to modern compositions by artists like Karlheinz Stockhausen and Witold Lutosławski. He has recorded extensively, including works by J.S. Bach, Arnold Schoenberg, and George Gershwin. Okonsar is known for his eclectic recital programs, often combining traditional pieces with modern and avant-garde works. He has also been involved in music-related technologies and has presented documentaries on Turkish national television. Currently, Okonsar resides in Turkey, where he continues to compose, perform, and teach. His recent compositions reflect his continued exploration of diverse musical styles and ensembles.
