Immortal is a band synonymous with the icy landscapes and dark lore of Norwegian black metal. Formed in 1991 in Bergen, Norway, by vocalist/bassist Abbath Doom Occulta (Olve Eikemo) and guitarist Demonaz Doom Occulta (Harald Nævdal), Immortal quickly became a pillar of the second wave of black metal with their unrelenting blast beats, grim lyrics, and guitar riffs as cold and sharp as a winter's night. Their debut album, "Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism" (1992), introduced their signature sound which draws heavily on themes of winter, darkness, and mythology.
Over the years, Immortal's music has shown a progression in complexity and production quality without losing the raw essence that defines black metal. By the release of "At The Heart Of Winter" in 1999, they had carved out a unique niche, with a slightly more polished sound and an epic scope to their compositions. The band underwent a few lineup changes, most notably the addition of drummer Horgh (Reidar Horghagen) in 1996, which solidified their powerful and precise rhythmic backbone. Their albums "Sons of Northern Darkness" (2002), and the long-awaited comeback record "Northern Chaos Gods" (2018) after a 9-year hiatus without studio releases, have ensured their place as legends within the black metal pantheon. Despite internal disputes and hiatuses, which led to Abbath's departure in 2015, Immortal persists in current time with Demonaz and Horgh at the helm, continuing to wage their musical 'War Against All' in the sprawling, frostbitten landscapes they so vividly portray through their work.
