Bennie Maupin is an American jazz multi-instrumentalist best known for his work on bass clarinet, tenor and soprano saxophones, and flute. He gained major recognition in the 1970s as part of several groundbreaking projects, including his contributions to Miles Davis' iconic Bitches Brew and Herbie Hancock's legendary Headhunters group. Maupin’s bass clarinet work, in particular, offered a textured, atmospheric quality that helped shape the sound of jazz fusion during that era.
In addition to his sideman work, Maupin has also released several well-regarded albums as a leader, including The Jewel in the Lotus, a deeply meditative and spiritual jazz album that’s considered a cult classic. His music often blends acoustic and electronic elements, and he's known for bringing a thoughtful, improvisational depth to everything he plays. Over the decades, he's remained a revered figure in jazz circles, both for his technical skill and his innovative spirit.
