George Walker

George Walker (1922–2018) was a trailblazing American composer, pianist, and educator, whose prolific career contributed significantly to the landscape of 20th-century classical music. Born in Washington D.C., Walker began his musical journey at an early age, showing prodigious talent as a pianist. He made history as the first African American to graduate from the Curtis Institute of Music, and later, to earn a doctorate from the Eastman School of Music. His notable achievements include becoming the first African American to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1996 for his work "Lilacs," a piece for voice and orchestra, which is a testament to his profound skill in composition and his ability to convey deep emotional narratives through music.

Throughout his career, George Walker composed works that were both innovative and deeply reflective of his experiences and cultural heritage. His compositions, which include over 90 works ranging from symphonies, concerti, string quartets, sonatas, and choral works, are celebrated for their technically demanding yet expressive nature. Walker's ability to blend traditional classical elements with modern and African American folk elements allowed him to create a unique and enduring musical voice. His works such as "Lyric for Strings," "Sinfonia No. 5 'Visions'," and the collection of his complete piano works are notable examples that showcase his versatile and sophisticated compositional style. Walker’s legacy as a pioneering figure in music persists, inspiring future generations of musicians and composers.
