The Helsinki Strings is a youth string orchestra based in Helsinki, Finland. Founded in 1972 by Hungarian brothers Géza and Csaba Szilvay, the orchestra has a rich history of promoting musical education and excellence. The ensemble consists of students from the East Helsinki Music Institute and the Sibelius Academy, with members ranging from 10 to 20 years old. Under the Szilvay brothers' leadership, The Helsinki Strings gained international recognition through numerous concert tours and recordings. After conducting the orchestra for nearly four decades, the brothers retired in 2010, passing the baton to Jukka Rantamäki.
The orchestra is known for its vibrant performances and educational impact, benefiting from the renowned Colourstrings teaching method developed by the Szilvay brothers. This approach emphasizes child-centered learning and has been influential in music education worldwide. The Helsinki Strings' repertoire includes a variety of classical pieces and contemporary works, as evident from their recent releases, which highlight their versatility and dedication to both traditional and modern music.
