Masako Ohta is a Japanese pianist and composer born in Tokyo in 1960. She studied piano at the Toho Gakuen School of Music in Tokyo and later at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin under renowned instructors such as Erich Andreas and György Sebök. Since 1988, she has been based in Munich, where she has developed a versatile career interpreting classical and modern works, as well as improvising and composing her own pieces. Her music often reflects her Japanese heritage and incorporates elements of poetry and diverse cultural influences. Ohta has collaborated with various artists, including the trumpeter Matthias Lindermayr, with whom she released albums like *MMMMH* and *Nozomi*. Her work has been recognized with several awards, including the Giesinger Kulturpreis and a Musikförderpreis from the City of Munich.
Ohta's recent releases include albums such as *My Japanese Heart*, which was well-received by critics, and *Nozomi*, a collaboration with Matthias Lindermayr. She is also known for her involvement in intercultural projects and her role as a co-founder of the IMAGINE-Festival, a peace and art festival inspired by Yoko Ono. Besides piano, she plays the Indian harmonium and electronic Taishōgoto, showcasing her eclectic musical interests. Ohta's performances often blend classical music with improvisation, reflecting her deep connection to both traditional and contemporary musical expressions.
