João Pedro Oliveira is a renowned Portuguese composer born in 1959. He studied organ performance and composition at the Gregorian Institute of Lisbon and architecture at the Fine Arts School of Lisbon. Oliveira furthered his education in the United States, completing a Doctorate in Music at the University of New York at Stony Brook, where he was a Fulbright scholar with support from the Gulbenkian Foundation. His diverse musical output includes opera, orchestral works, chamber music, electroacoustic music, and experimental video. Oliveira has received over 70 international prizes and awards for his compositions, including multiple first prizes at the Bourges Electroacoustic Music Competition and the prestigious Magisterium Prize.
Oliveira has held teaching positions at Aveiro University in Portugal and the Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil. He is currently the Corwin Endowed Chair in Composition at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His work often explores the interaction between acoustic and electronic sounds, and he has published several articles and a book on music theory. Oliveira's compositions are performed globally, and his discography includes numerous solo and collaborative CDs.
