The Aggrovators were a group of reggae session musicians in the 1970s that were essential in shaping the sound of dub and roots reggae during one of its most influential eras. Formed by and frequently associated with producer Bunny 'Striker' Lee, The Aggrovators included some of Jamaica's most esteemed talents, such as drummer Sly Dunbar, bassist Robbie Shakespeare, guitarist Earl "Chinna" Smith, keyboardist Jackie Mittoo, and saxophonist Tommy McCook, among others. They were named "The Aggrovators" to embody their aggressive and innovative approach to music production.
The Aggrovators' music is characterized by its laid-back grooves, deep bass lines, and the creative use of effects like reverb and echo, emerging as the backbone of countless classic recordings and dub renditions. They backed numerous prominent artists of the time, such as Johnny Clarke, Cornell Campbell, and Delroy Wilson, contributing greatly to the dub genre through their collaborations with legendary dub pioneer King Tubby. In their later years, reissues and compilations of their original work have continued to be released, such as "Striker Selects Rasta Dub" and "Dubbing in the Front Yard & Conflict Dub," both celebrating their timeless sound and legendary producer Bunny Lee's monumental influence. Their work remains a benchmark for the genre and an instrumental chapter in reggae's continued global resonance.
