Gertrud Grob-Prandl

**Gertrud Grob-Prandl** was an Austrian dramatic soprano celebrated for her powerhouse voice and commanding presence in Wagnerian and Strauss operas. Born in Vienna in 1917, she rose to prominence in the post-World War II era, becoming a staple at major European opera houses like the Vienna State Opera, La Scala, and the Bavarian State Opera. Her volcanic vocal intensity made her a go-to for demanding roles like Brünnhilde in Wagner’s *Ring Cycle* and the title role in *Turandot*, though she also shone in Mozart’s *Idomeneo*. Grob-Prandl’s legendary live performances, including *Tristan und Isolde* and *Die Walküre*, cemented her reputation as one of the 20th century’s great Wagner interpreters. She retired in the 1970s and passed away in 1995, leaving behind recordings that still thrill opera buffs with their raw emotional fire.
