Whirlwind Heat is a band that formed in 1996, consisting of synthesizer player/vocalist David Swanson, bassist Steve Damstra, and drummer Brad Holland. The band's name is inspired by the cover art of Sonic Youth's 1990 album "Goo," created by Raymond Pettibon. In 1999, they were joined by guitarist Jason Eberspeaker, who later left to pursue a career in fine arts. The band gained attention after being recorded by Jack White of The White Stripes in his attic studio on June 20, 2000. This led to the release of the single "Glaxefusion" and a track on White's compilation "Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit."
Whirlwind Heat released their debut album "Do Rabbits Wonder?" in 2003, which was also the first release on Jack White's Third Man Records. They followed this with the EP "Flamingo Honey" in 2004, notable for being written and recorded in just five hours. Their second full-length album, "Types of Wood," came out in 2006. The band's last live performance was at the Summer Sonic Festival in Tokyo, Japan, in 2006. In 2007, they collaborated with Devonte Hynes on a project called Lightspeed Heat. Whirlwind Heat self-released "Self Titled or Scoop Du Jour" in 2008 under their own label, Heat Enterprises.
