The Avengers

The Avengers were a cornerstone of the San Francisco punk scene in the late 1970s. Formed in 1977, the band was fronted by charismatic vocalist Penelope Houston, whose fierce stage presence and politically charged lyrics helped define the group’s powerful sound. The trio, also featuring guitarist Greg Ingraham, drummer Danny Furious, and bassist Jimmy Wilsey, played high-energy shows and opened for the Sex Pistols at their final concert at Winterland in San Francisco in 1978—a defining moment in punk history.

While The Avengers only released a handful of tracks during their original run, their music became hugely influential in the punk community long after they'd disbanded. Their self-titled compilation album, released in the early '80s, gained cult status, and reissues like Live at Winterland 1978 and The Lost Episodes series have kept their legacy alive. With raw, melodic riffs and a strong stance on social issues, The Avengers remain one of punk's most respected and enduring underground acts.
