Spandau Ballet is a seminal British band, primarily associated with the New Romantic movement, that initially rose to prominence in the 1980s. Formed in London in 1979, the band's classic lineup featured Tony Hadley on vocals, brothers Gary and Martin Kemp on guitar and bass respectively, Steve Norman on saxophone, and John Keeble on drums. They achieved success with a polished, romantic image and a string of hit singles that blended pop, funk, and synth-infused rhythms. Their early work was characterized by a fashion-forward, glamorous aesthetic that made them icons of their era.
The band's most celebrated period includes chart-topping hits like "True" and "Gold," both of which remain enduring anthems of the 80s with their slick production and catchy melodies. Spandau Ballet's influence waned somewhat in the late 80s and early 90s as musical tastes shifted, leading to a hiatus in 1990 after the release of the album "Heart Like A Sky." However, they experienced a resurgence of interest in the 21st century, reuniting for a series of tours, and releasing new music, such as "Once More" in 2009, which featured reworked versions of their classic songs along with two new tracks. Whilst their individual members have pursued various solo projects and acting careers, notably with Martin Kemp finding success as an actor, the band's music continues to be celebrated and remixed for contemporary audiences, ensuring their legacy endures through compilations, remasters, and live performances.
