Steve Grossman

Steve Grossman was an American jazz saxophonist best known for his powerful tone and bebop-influenced style. Born on January 18, 1951, in New York City, he rose to prominence in the late 1960s and early 1970s when he succeeded Wayne Shorter in Miles Davis’s band at just 18 years old. Grossman played on several of Davis's fusion-era recordings, helping shape the electric jazz landscape of the time.

After his stint with Miles, Grossman went on to perform with jazz legends like Elvin Jones and Don Alias. He was equally comfortable in the realms of hard bop and avant-garde jazz, and his virtuosity made him a respected figure among both peers and fans. Over the years, he released numerous recordings as a bandleader, showcasing his deep musicality and commitment to the jazz tradition. Steve Grossman passed away in 2020, leaving behind a legacy cherished by jazz aficionados around the world.
