Harry Taussig is an American acoustic guitarist known for his unique fingerpicking style and contributions to the American Primitive Guitar genre. Born in 1940, Taussig emerged in the 1960s folk revival scene but remained an enigmatic figure, releasing his debut album, "Fate Is Only Once," in 1965 to little fanfare. This LP would become a collector's item, largely due to its limited pressings and Taussig's abrupt disappearance from the music scene following its release.
Taussig made an unexpected return to recording after a hiatus that spanned several decades, with his comeback marked by the 2006 reissue of "Fate Is Only Once" and a succession of new works. His later albums, including "Fate Is Only Twice" (2012), "The Diamond of Lost Alphabets" (2015), and "Too Late to Die Young" (2017), showcase the same intricate, expressive playing that marked his early work, and have helped to cement his status as a cult figure in acoustic guitar circles. In addition to his solo endeavors, Taussig collaborated with fellow guitarist Max Ochs for the 2017 release, "The Music of Harry Taussig & Max Ochs," which further solidifies the artistic lineage between two pioneering figures of the American fingerstyle idiom. Celebrating his eighth decade with the release of "80" (2020), Taussig's subtle mastery and continued evolution as a musician serve as a testimony to the enduring appeal of his craft.
