This Heat

This Heat was an influential experimental British band formed in the late 1970s, recognized for their innovative blend of avant-garde rock, progressive jazz, and electronic music, often seen as forerunners of industrial, post-rock, and noise rock genres. The ensemble was founded in Camberwell, London, by multi-instrumentalists Charles Bullen and Charles Hayward, and bassist Gareth Williams. They exhibited a radical approach to recording and composition, marked by intense improvisation, stark production, and a politically charged ethos.

Reputed for their intense live performances, This Heat also made significant strides in the recording studio. They released their self-titled debut album, "This Heat," in 1979, which showcased their ability to meld tape manipulation with traditional instrumentation, creating a disorienting yet captivating sonic experience. The follow-up release, 1981's "Deceit," is widely considered one of the band's masterpieces, reflecting the cold war era's anxiety with a more structured yet still menacing sound. Despite disbanding in 1982, This Heat's music has seen a resurgence of interest over the years, with archival and live recordings such as "Repeat" and "Live 80/81" solidifying their position as a radical and challenging force in the history of underground music.
