Ava Mendoza is a Brooklyn-based guitarist, composer, and improviser known for her genre-defying approach to electric guitar. Fusing elements of avant-garde jazz, experimental rock, noise, and free improvisation, Mendoza has carved out a unique sonic space with her raw, expressive playing and technical command. With a background in classical guitar and training from Mills College, she has performed internationally and collaborated with a wide range of artists across experimental and jazz scenes, including Matana Roberts, William Hooker, Nick Zinner, and William Parker.
In addition to her solo work and the trio Unnatural Ways, Mendoza is a frequent contributor to cutting-edge projects and ensembles. Her work pushes boundaries—whether she’s using distortion-heavy textures, intricate melodies, or extended techniques—and continually challenges traditional expectations of the guitar. Releases like We Will Be Millions and Of It But Not Is It showcase her adventurous spirit and dedication to sonic exploration. Whether on stage or in the studio, Mendoza remains a leading voice in the world of experimental guitar music.
