Sebadoh is an American indie rock band formed in 1986 in Northampton, Massachusetts. The group initially emerged as a side project of Dinosaur Jr. bassist Lou Barlow, and the lineup coalesced around Barlow, Eric Gaffney (drums), and Jason Loewenstein (bass, guitars) with each member sharing songwriting and vocal duties. Sebadoh is often credited as one of the founding bands of the lo-fi genre, an approach to recording music that utilizes low-cost equipment, often in a home setting, conveying a raw intimacy in opposition to the polished aesthetics of the time. The band's music merges elements of punk rock, folk, and noise with an emotive core, often dealing with themes of personal struggle, relationships, and self-discovery.
Throughout the 1990s, Sebadoh released a series of influential recordings, including "III" (1991) and "Bakesale" (1994), carving out a significant niche in the alternative music landscape of the era with their confessional lyrics and innovative song structures. Following a hiatus in the early 2000s, the band reunited and continued to craft their signature sound through releases like "Defend Yourself" (2013) and "Act Surprised" (2019). With albums like "The Sebadoh" (1999) and EPs like "Secret EP" (2012), Sebadoh has exhibited a sustained creative evolution, consistently showcasing their ability to blend melodic sensibilities with a lo-fi ethos in a way that resonates with a devoted fanbase and continues to influence emerging artists within indie and alternative rock.
