Bækkelund studied in Norway and later at the prestigious Berlin Hochschule für Musik, further honing his craft under noted pianists like Ilona Kabos.
Throughout his career, Bækkelund earned acclaim for his interpretations of composers such as Grieg, Schumann, Beethoven, and Rachmaninoff, often spotlighting lesser-known works alongside classic repertoire. He was especially passionate about promoting Norwegian music and played a significant role in bringing it to international audiences.
