Jurjen Hempel is a Dutch composer and arranger who has made a name for himself in the world of concert band music. Born in the Netherlands in 1967, Hempel began studying music at a young age. He went on to study composition and arranging at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where he graduated with honors. After graduating, Hempel worked as a freelance composer and arranger, writing music for a variety of ensembles, including concert bands, orchestras, and choirs. In 2005, he was appointed composer-in-residence of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, one of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. Hempel has since written a number of major works for the orchestra, including his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered in 2007.
