Paul Kletzki was a highly respected conductor and composer, best known for his powerful interpretations of the Romantic repertoire. Born in 1900 in Poland, Kletzki began his career as a violinist and composer before turning to conducting. He studied in Berlin and became active in the vibrant German music scene of the 1920s. After fleeing the rise of Nazism due to his Jewish heritage, he held various conducting posts across Europe, including prominent positions with the Liverpool Philharmonic and later the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.
Kletzki brought a deep emotional intensity to his readings of works by Beethoven, Brahms, Schumann, and Tchaikovsky, among others. His recordings remain admired for their clarity and expressive depth, showcasing his meticulous attention to musical detail. Despite the challenges he faced during his lifetime, including the tragic loss of many of his own compositions during the war, Kletzki left a lasting legacy through his work on the podium and his advocacy for great music.
