Mike + The Mechanics is a British pop/rock supergroup formed in 1985 as a side project by Mike Rutherford, the bassist and guitarist of the world-renowned band Genesis. The collective has been known for their melodic pop rock with a progressive twist, bringing together the talents of various accomplished musicians. Over the years, their lineup has experienced changes, with Rutherford being the consistent driving force. The band's sound is characterized by soulful, harmonic vocals and thought-provoking lyrics, underpinned by Rutherford's distinctive guitar work.
The group experienced their first wave of success in the late 1980s and early 1990s with hits like "Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)", "All I Need Is a Miracle", and their most memorable number, "The Living Years", which dealt with themes of intergenerational relationships and the passing of Rutherford's own father. Despite the changes in the music industry and the band's lineup—most notably, the replacement of original lead vocalists Paul Carrack and the late Paul Young with Andrew Roachford and Tim Howar in the mid-2000s—Mike + The Mechanics have continued to tour and record. Their more recent works, including albums like "Let Me Fly" (2017) and the revisited hits collection "Out of the Blue" (2019), showcase the band's enduring ability to craft contemporary music that resonates with fans old and new, while staying true to the heartfelt storytelling that has been a hallmark of their work.
