Hamish McKeich is a renowned New Zealand-born conductor and bassoonist. Born on May 13, 1967, in Christchurch, he began his musical journey learning the oboe and later the bassoon under the tutelage of his father, Ross McKeich. Hamish furthered his studies at Wellington Polytechnic and later in Sydney. He started his professional career as a bassoonist, becoming Associate Principal Bassoon with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra at the age of 19. Over time, he transitioned to conducting, working with numerous orchestras internationally, including the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, where he is currently the Principal Conductor in Residence.
McKeich is known for his passion for contemporary and experimental music, having given over 100 world premieres. He is also the chief conductor of the contemporary ensemble Stroma and has worked with orchestras in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Notable performances include a critically acclaimed partnership with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, particularly through the "Shed Series," which innovatively engages audiences with orchestral music. His work has been recognized with a Douglas Lilburn Trust citation for outstanding services to New Zealand music in 2012. Recent performances include a notable rendition of Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, known as the Pastoral Symphony.
