SL2 is a UK-based electronic music group that made significant waves in the early 1990s rave and breakbeat hardcore scenes. The outfit was initially formed by DJs Slipmatt (Matthew Nelson) and Lime (John Fernandez), and later joined by vocalist MC Jay (Jason James) who added an additional dynamic to the group with his energetic toasting style. Their name SL2 derives from the initials of Slipmatt (SL) and Lime (L), with the '2' signifying the partnership.
The group rose to prominence with tracks that blended breakbeats and heavy basslines with the infectious rhythms of reggae and dancehall music, epitomized by their hit single "On A Ragga Tip," which became an anthem on dancefloors across the UK and beyond. Their 1992 release "DJs Take Control" reached number 11 in the UK Singles Chart, thoroughly embedding them in the fabric of UK rave culture. After a break, SL2 revisited their roots with "On a Ragga Tip '97," a reenergized remix of their classic, and continued their contribution to the scene through subsequent releases and remixes that maintained their legacy within the world of electronic music. Despite the changes in the dance music landscape over the decades, SL2's music has continued to resonate with fans of classic rave sounds, and their most recent releases, such as the "The SL2 EP," showcase their enduring ability to get dance floors moving.
