Don Caballero

Don Caballero is a pivotal figure in the instrumental rock and math rock scenes, known for their complex, rhythmically intricate music that often eschews traditional song structures in favor of experimental compositions. Formed in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1991, the band was named after the character Guy Caballero, played by Joe Flaherty on the sketch comedy show SCTV. Their sound, characterized by dynamic time signature changes and intricate guitar interplay, was primarily driven by the innovative drumming of co-founder Damon Che.

Throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s, Don Caballero released several critically-acclaimed albums that pushed the boundaries of rock music and influenced a generation of musicians looking to experiment with the math rock genre. Albums such as "For Respect" (1993), "Don Caballero 2” (1995), and "What Burns Never Returns" (1998) are considered landmarks in this field. Despite various line-up changes over the years, including the departure of all original members except Che, the band maintained its innovative spirit, as heard in later works like "American Don" (2000) and "World Class Listening Problem" (2006). Their later releases, such as "Punkgasm" (2008), continued to reflect the band’s penchant for pushing musical limits. Don Caballero's legacy is not only found in their recorded output but also in their reputation for electrifying, complex live performances, some of which are captured in releases like "Gang Banged With A Headache, And Live" (2012) and the archival release “Lookit Them Elly May Wrists Go: Live Early Caballero.”
