Taproot is an American nu metal/alternative rock band hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, which gained prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Formed in 1997 by lead vocalist Stephen Richards, guitarist Mike DeWolf, bassist Philip Lipscomb, and drummer Jarrod Montague (who was later replaced by Nick Fredell), the band is notable for their dynamic sound that combines heavy metal with introspective lyrics and melodic elements, often exploring themes of personal struggle and self-reflection.
Following their early years of independent releases, Taproot caught the attention of major labels after a public feud with Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, which inadvertently provided them with media exposure. They signed to Atlantic Records and released their major label debut "Gift" in 2000, which featured the hit single "Poem" propelling them to further success with its follow-up album "Welcome". After several more records and a storied career, Taproot continued to evolve their style. Their most recent releases include full-length albums such as "The Episodes" and "Plead the Fifth," showcasing a matured sound and deeper forays into conceptual storytelling, alongside singles like "No Surrender" and "Day By Day," which reflect the band's unwavering commitment to their roots while also experimenting with new musical ideas. Despite not achieving the widespread mainstream success of some of their peers, Taproot has maintained a dedicated fanbase and remains an influential act within their genre.
