Matt Block is a New York City–based trumpet player, songwriter, and music industry professional originally from Philadelphia, where a lifelong jazz journey began with his grandfather, Morton Block, introducing him to the trumpet at a young age. Matt is best known for his deeply personal collaborative albums with his grandfather, including the breakout debut Strange Harbors (2022), a multi-generational jazz saga that went viral online and drew widespread media attention for its emotional storytelling and musical depth. Their follow-up, The Lonely Sea, continues this tradition, featuring rediscovered compositions from Morton’s days in the Navy and further exploring themes of love and heartbreak across decades.
Beyond his family projects, Matt is also the Director of Content Production at Splice and a co-founder of la reserve records, a major independent jazz label. His releases, such as Three AM, Paraíso Efêmero, and I Wanna Be With You, blend classic jazz elements with fresh big band arrangements and have connected with both longtime jazz fans and new audiences. Matt’s music pulls from rich personal history and family stories, and his live performances have built a reputation for warmth, seamless collaboration, and authenticity—qualities that make his work stand out in the modern jazz scene.
