Jāzeps Vītols

Jāzeps Vītols, often called the "father of Latvian classical music," was a composer, pianist, and educator who shaped Latvia’s musical identity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in 1863, he studied under Rimsky-Korsakov at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory before returning to Latvia, where he became a cultural pillar. Vītols co-founded the Latvian Conservatory (now named after him) and mentored generations of composers. His work blends Romantic-era grandeur with Latvian folk influences, heard in lush orchestral pieces like *Dramatic Overture* and tender choral works such as *Autumn Song*. A champion of national pride, he composed Latvia’s first art songs and left a legacy of choral music still beloved today. After fleeing Soviet occupation in 1944, he spent his final years in Germany, passing away in 1948.
