Grupo Sierra Maestra

Grupo Sierra Maestra is a revered Cuban band known for their authentic embodiment and preservation of the son cubano musical style, which is considered the backbone of salsa and has shaped much of Latin American music. The group was formed in 1976 in Havana, by a group of university students who were passionate about the traditional Cuban music of the 1920s and 1930s. Named after the mountain range in eastern Cuba, Sierra Maestra has been synonymous with the son revival both domestically and internationally, bringing the vibrant sounds of pre-revolutionary Cuba to contemporary audiences.

Over the years, Sierra Maestra has become ambassadors of Cuban son, recording numerous albums and performing extensively around the globe. Their music is characterized by lively rhythms, intricate guitar lines, and soulful vocals, all of which hark back to the genre's golden age. The band has also been integral in mentoring and influencing a new generation of musicians in the son tradition. Despite changes in the lineup over the decades, the essence of the group remains unchanged, as evident in the restoration of their classic hits like "Con Sabor a Cuba" and "Sonerito," which have been remastered to capture the timeless spirit of their music. Sierra Maestra's dedication to cultural authenticity and musical excellence has made them not only a beloved act within Cuba but also esteemed cultural figures far beyond their home shores.
