Tom Morello, known by his folk alter ego The Nightwatchman, is an American musician, singer-songwriter, and political activist who gained fame as the innovative guitarist of the seminal rap-metal band Rage Against the Machine. Born on May 30, 1964, in Harlem, New York, Morello's distinctive guitar style, incorporating heavy-metal riffs and hip-hop influences with unconventional techniques, has established him as one of rock's most unique and influential guitarists.
In 2003, Morello embarked on a solo acoustic project under the moniker The Nightwatchman, providing a stark contrast to his electric work with Rage Against the Machine and later Audioslave. The Nightwatchman persona allowed Morello to express his deeply-held political convictions through folk music, channeling the protest spirits of Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. His debut solo album, "One Man Revolution," was released in 2007, followed by "The Fabled City" in 2008. "Union Town," an eight-song EP of pro-union songs, came out in 2011, dovetailing with Morello's involvement in labor protests around the United States. Later that same year, he released the full-length album "Worldwide Rebel Songs," further cementing The Nightwatchman's place in the pantheon of politically-charged American singer-songwriters. With his acoustic guitar and harmonica, Morello continues to wield music as a weapon against social and political injustices.
