Jerry Holland

Jerry Holland was a masterful fiddler, renowned for his passionate interpretations of Celtic music, particularly the traditional styles indigenous to Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. He was born on February 23, 1955, in Boston, Massachusetts, to Canadian parents and began playing the fiddle at the tender age of five. The music of Cape Breton, with its Scottish roots and engaging rhythms, had a profound impact on Holland, who eventually moved to the island to immerse himself in its rich musical heritage.

Over the course of his career, Holland released several influential albums, including his self-titled work "Jerry Holland," which showcased his virtuosity and deep understanding of the genre. "Parlor Music," released in 2005, harked back to the intimate setting of 19th-century musical gatherings and allowed Holland's fiddle to sing with convivial warmth. "Fiddler's Choice," a collection of tunes released in 2000, captured Holland's ability to infuse traditional melodies with contemporary sensibilities, while "A Trip to Cape Breton" was another highlight, offering listeners an audible journey through the landscape that so inspired Holland's craft. His music continues to inspire a new generation of musicians and listeners alike, serving as a bridge between the past and future of Cape Breton fiddle music. Sadly, Jerry Holland passed away on July 16, 2009, but his legacy as one of the great modern ambassadors of Cape Breton fiddling endures.
