Myrkur is the musical project of Danish musician and multi-instrumentalist Amalie Bruun, whose work often traverses the boundaries of black metal, folk, and atmospheric music. Myrkur, which means "darkness" in Icelandic, came into the spotlight with the release of an eponymous EP in 2014, followed by the critically acclaimed debut album, "M." in 2015. Bruun, who has a background in modelling and pop music, utilizes her wide range of talents to create a unique blend of haunting melodies, raw metal ferocity, and traditional Scandinavian folk elements. She often sings in her native language, bringing a sense of ethereal authenticity to her work, and is known for her ethereal live performances which often feature her playing a variety of traditional instruments.
More recently, Myrkur has explored an even more diverse musical palette. In 2020, the album "Folkesange" saw her dive deeply into the rich well of traditional Nordic folk music, moving away from black metal elements and embracing a more acoustic and serene approach. Her adaptability and continuous evolution were further showcased in the "Ragnarok" original soundtrack, which underscored her ability to craft atmospheric scores. Furthermore, "The Alchemy Project," released in 2021, delves into a collaborative spirit, featuring guest musicians and a variety of genre influences, further expanding her repertoire. With each release, Myrkur not only elucidates her profound connection to Nordic culture and its mythologies but also solidifies her standing as a bold and innovative artist within the modern music landscape.
