Zozobra is a sludge metal project that was conceived by Caleb Scofield, the bassist and vocalist for the post-hardcore band Cave In, as an outlet for his heavier musical ideas that didn't quite fit within the framework of his primary band. The project, named after a giant effigy burned during a festival in Santa Fe, New Mexico symbolizing the vanquishing of gloom, perfectly encapsulates the band's sonic direction—dark, cathartic, and relentless. Zozobra's sound is characterized by its thick, punishing riffs, aggressive rhythms, and Scofield's guttural vocal style, all of which coalesce into an intense listening experience that is both harrowing and exhilarating.
Zozobra's discography is marked by several critically acclaimed releases, which showcase the project's evolution and grasp over the sludge metal genre. "Harmonic Tremors," their debut album released in 2007, serves as a formidable entrance, entrenching Scofield's reputation as a force within heavy music. Following their initial offering, "Bird of Prey" arrived in 2008, further expanding their sonic palette while maintaining the raw emotion and power of the preceding work. The 2013 EP "Savage Masters" stands as their most recent release and continues to solidify Zozobra's influence in the metal community. Presenting a more refined yet no less impactful collection of tracks, "Savage Masters" exemplifies the band's commitment to cultivating an intense sonic landscape that mirrors the feral spirit from which their name derives. Sadly, Caleb Scofield passed away in an accident in March 2018, leaving behind a potent legacy with Zozobra as a testament to his musical prowess and artistic vision.
