Sir Richard Bishop

Sir Richard Bishop is an American guitarist, composer, and improviser, renowned for his eclectic and virtuosic guitar work that traverses diverse musical traditions. He emerged from the 1980s as a founding member of the avant-garde group Sun City Girls, alongside his brother Alan Bishop and drummer Charles Gocher. Over three decades, Sun City Girls became a cult favorite within the underground experimental scene, with an extensive catalog that defied genre boundaries.

After Sun City Girls disbanded following Gocher's death in 2007, Sir Richard Bishop has pursued a prolific solo career, which emphasizes his intricate solo acoustic guitar performances. His solo works often reflect a confluence of global influences, including Middle Eastern, North African, South Asian, and Western improvisational styles. Albums such as "Oneiric Formulary" and "Tangier Sessions" exhibit an immersive, exploratory quality that showcases Bishop's technical prowess and deep appreciation for cross-cultural musical dialogue. With "If You Don't Like It... DON'T!" and "Beyond All Defects," he continues to challenge listeners with his amalgam of experimental and transcendent sounds. His daring approach to the guitar, coupled with his reverence for polytheistic themes as heard in "Polytheistic Fragments," and his evocative narrative style, as in "Salvador Kali," mark Sir Richard Bishop as a boundary-pushing artist firmly rooted in both the traditional and the avant-garde realms of acoustic music.
