Julius Katchen was an American concert pianist renowned for his powerful interpretations of Romantic repertoire, particularly the works of Johannes Brahms. Born in 1926 in Long Branch, New Jersey, Katchen was a child prodigy who gave his first public performance at the age of 10. He moved to Europe after World War II and became closely associated with the Decca label, where he recorded extensively. His celebrated recordings of the complete solo piano works of Brahms helped cement his reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of the composer in the 20th century.
Throughout his career, Katchen performed with many of the world’s top orchestras and conductors, and was a fixture at major music festivals. He also collaborated with other prominent musicians, including violinist Ruggiero Ricci. Sadly, Katchen’s life was cut short when he died of cancer in 1969 at just 42 years old, but his legacy lives on through his expressive and virtuosic recordings.
