Alex Welsh

Alex Welsh was a prominent Scottish jazz trumpeter and bandleader, best known for his work in the British traditional jazz scene from the 1950s through the 1970s. Born in Edinburgh in 1929, Welsh moved to London in the early 1950s, where he quickly became a key figure in the revival of Dixieland and swing jazz. With a warm trumpet tone and a deep affinity for the styles of Louis Armstrong and other early jazz greats, Welsh led a popular band that featured top British jazz musicians like Roy Crimmins and Lennie Hastings.

Welsh and his band gained a solid reputation not just in the UK but also internationally, performing at major jazz festivals and touring extensively. His recordings — including albums like Side by Side, Bones For The King, and Just One More Chance — showcase his infectious swing feel and love for classic jazz standards. He continued performing until his death in 1982, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most beloved figures in British jazz.
