Mahlathini

Mahlathini, born Simon Nkabinde (1937–1999), was a legendary South African singer known as the "Lion of Soweto" and the "King of the Groaners" for his deep, gravelly vocals that became the signature sound of *mbaqanga* music. Rising to fame in the 1960s, he formed a powerhouse trio with the Mahotella Queens (a female vocal group) and the Makgona Tsohle Band, creating electrifying dance tunes that blended traditional Zulu harmonies with upbeat electric grooves. His theatrical stage presence and emotive "groaning" style—often echoing social struggles under apartheid—made him a cultural icon.

Though his career faced challenges during apartheid’s cultural restrictions, Mahlathini’s music gained global recognition in the 1980s, thanks to collaborations with artists like Youssou N’Dour and international tours. Albums like *The Lion of Soweto* and *King of the Groaners* cemented his legacy as a pioneer of African roots music, influencing generations of artists. Even after his passing, his growling vocals and rhythmic storytelling remain timeless, celebrated in releases like *Utshwala Begazati* and *Dithoriso Tsa Morena* for their raw energy and cultural resonance.
