Apollo 440, also known as Apollo Four Forty or @440, is an eclectic British electronic rock band that formed in Liverpool, England, in 1990. The group comprises brothers Trevor and Howard Gray along with Noko, who is the band's guitarist. Known for their fusion of electronic music and rock aesthetics, Apollo 440 hit the music scene with full force, targeting the dancefloors while also appealing to the alternative rock audiences of the 90s. They gained significant mainstream recognition for their dynamic and energetic style, which encompasses a range of genres from techno, breakbeat, and house, to name a few.
Their 1994 debut album, "Millennium Fever," set the stage with its techno-rock repertoire, but it was their follow-up albums, "Electro Glide in Blue" in 1997 and "Gettin' High On Your Own Supply" in 1999, that really established Apollo 440 as a fixture in the electronic music scene. The latter album featured the hit single "Stop the Rock," which became an international success and was featured in several films, advertisements, and video games. However, it wasn't just their infectious hooks and choruses that caught the ear; it was also their penchant for cinematic sampling and a razor-sharp production style. The band's last studio album, "Dude Descending A Staircase," released in 2003, continued their tradition of blending genre-defying sounds but failed to repeat the commercial success of its predecessors. Nonetheless, Apollo 440 have left an indelible mark on the fusion of rock and electronic music, influencing both the mainstream and the underground music scenes.
