The Bothy Band

The Bothy Band was one of the most influential Irish folk bands of the 1970s, known for their energetic and innovative approach to traditional music. Formed in Dublin in 1974, the group consisted of some of the top folk musicians of the time. Their lineup featured the likes of Matt Molloy on flute, Paddy Keenan on uilleann pipes, Dónal Lunny on bouzouki, Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill on clavinet and vocals, Mícheál Ó Domhnaill on guitar, and Paddy Glackin on fiddle; later, Glackin was replaced by Kevin Burke. The Bothy Band's arrangements were characterized by tight, interlocking, and often complex instrumentation that breathed new life into traditional tunes.

The Bothy Band's discography captures the raw energy and creativity that they brought to the Irish music scene during their relatively brief existence. Among their most celebrated albums are "Old Hag You Have Killed Me" (1976) and "Out of the Wind, Into the Sun" (1977), both of which are landmarks in the folk genre and showcase their prowess in blending profound musicianship with the deep-seated roots of Irish culture. Although the band disbanded in 1979, their influence persists, and their recordings continue to inspire new generations of traditional musicians. "After Hours" (1979) recorded live in Paris and the compilation "The Best of the Bothy Band" highlight the enduring legacy of their talent and the indelible mark they left on Irish music. "1975", their debut album, serves as a timeless testament to the band's foundational sound and innovative spirit.
