Tony Oxley is a pioneering British drummer and composer best known for his influential work in free improvisation and avant-garde jazz. Born in Sheffield in 1938, Oxley emerged on the UK jazz scene during the 1960s and quickly gained a reputation for his innovative and highly textural approach to drumming. He was a founding member of the Incus Records label alongside guitarist Derek Bailey and saxophonist Evan Parker, helping to foster the development of European free improvisation.
Over the years, Oxley has collaborated with a host of boundary-pushing artists, including Cecil Taylor, Anthony Braxton, and Bill Dixon. A master of both acoustic and electronic percussion, his playing often blends complex rhythmic structures with spontaneous, abstract soundscapes. Whether recording solo projects or contributing to group improvisations, Tony Oxley has remained a vital force in experimental music for decades.
