Xathrites is a Depressive Black Metal band with a unique history. Formed in Baghdad, Iraq, in 2005 by Alex Basher and Saqer Vashkigalix, the band originally aimed to play pure black metal but evolved into depressive black metal due to the tumultuous environment they lived in, particularly the war in Iraq. The name "Xathrites" is inspired by an Assyrian leader named Phraortes, who led a rebellion against Darius Hystaspes, symbolizing rebellion. The band's sound reflects the themes of grief, depression, and resilience amidst conflict. In 2007, after a brief split, the band was reformed in Egypt when Alex Basher moved there.
As a depressive black metal band, Xathrites' music is characterized by its melancholic and introspective nature, often exploring themes of hopelessness and despair. Their discography includes titles that resonate with these themes, such as "Hope Is A Mental Illness" and "As My Last Ray Of Hope Fades." Despite not being widely recognized in mainstream music, Xathrites has established a niche following within the black metal community. Their music is appreciated for its emotional depth and its ability to convey the darker aspects of human experience.
