Michelangelo Galilei was an Italian composer and lutenist of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. Born in Munich, he came from a musical family – his father was the renowned composer and lutenist Vincenzo Galilei, and he was also the younger brother of the famous astronomer Galileo Galilei. Though overshadowed by his more famous relatives, Michelangelo carved out his own niche, primarily composing for the lute.
His surviving works, mainly consisting of lute pieces, showcase a delicate and expressive style, reflecting the transition from Renaissance to Baroque musical aesthetics. While he held various court positions throughout his career, his lasting legacy lies in his contributions to the lute repertoire, which continues to be appreciated and performed by lutenists today.
