Thomas Moore (1779-1852) was an Irish poet, singer, songwriter, and entertainer, hugely popular in his day. He's best known for his Irish Melodies, a series of songs which adapted traditional Irish tunes and gave them new lyrics, often with a romantic or patriotic bent. Think of him as a sort of early 19th-century pop star! He moved in high literary circles, pals with the likes of Lord Byron and Sir Walter Scott, and his work was translated across Europe. While his poetry isn't as widely read today, his songs like "The Last Rose of Summer" and "Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms" are still familiar and beloved.
Beyond the Irish Melodies, Moore wrote longer poetic works like *Lalla Rookh*, an oriental romance, and even a biography of Lord Byron. He was a prolific and versatile artist, composing music for his songs, performing them in salons, and publishing collections of his work. He had a real knack for melody and sentiment, which explains his widespread appeal during his lifetime.
