Bernhard Lewkovitch was a Danish composer, organist, and cantor, born on May 28, 1927, in Copenhagen. He was educated at the musical conservatories in Paris and Copenhagen, and his career was deeply influenced by his Catholic faith. Lewkovitch worked as an organist and cantor at St. Ansgar's Cathedral in Copenhagen, and his music often reflected traditional Catholic influences. He was known for his choral works, including masses, motets, and chorales, which were characterized by a sober and personal musical style. Throughout his career, Lewkovitch founded and directed the Schola Gregoriana and Schola Cantorum in Copenhagen, choirs dedicated to Renaissance polyphonic music. His contributions to Danish music culture were significant, despite often being viewed as an outsider. Lewkovitch's work was recognized with several awards, including the Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl Nielsen grant on two occasions. He passed away on January 4, 2024, at the age of 96. His legacy includes a unique blend of traditional and experimental music that continues to be celebrated in the Danish music scene.
