Dariush Dolat-Shahi

Dariush Dolat-Shahi is an Iranian-American composer known for blending traditional Persian music with electronic and avant-garde elements. Born in Iran, he studied both Persian and Western music at the Tehran Conservatory, graduating in 1968. He later pursued further education in electronic music at the Amsterdam Conservatory and Columbia University, where he earned his doctorate in 1981. One of his most notable works is the 1985 album *Electronic Music, Tar and Sehtar*, released by Folkways Records, which combines Persian string instruments like the *tar* and *sehtar* with computer-generated sounds and natural ambient recordings. This unique fusion creates a captivating soundscape that reflects his diverse musical influences.

Dolat-Shahi's career has been marked by his exploration of multiple cultural traditions, as evident in his compositions that merge electronic experimentation with traditional Persian instrumentation. After completing his studies, he moved to Portland, Oregon, where he taught at various universities before becoming a freelance performer and composer. His work continues to inspire with its innovative blend of old and new musical elements. Recent releases like *The Third Eye*, *When the Moon Whispers*, *Otashgah: Place of Fire*, showcase his ongoing creativity in combining diverse musical styles.
